The David Magee Show was graced with the presence of Ruthie Thompson, Events Coordinator for Outdoor Chattanooga, on Wednesday. She was a delight!

Outdoor Chattanooga was created in 2003 and stemmed from an initiative by Chattanooga’s Mayor, Bob Corker, now a U.S. Senator. According to their website, Outdoor Chattanooga was designed to be “a regional mechanism with facilities dedicated to the recreational use, education, and stewardship of the region’s natural areas.” More succinctly, it’s about having fun outside.

In the coming weeks, we’ll be visiting more with Ruthie Thompson and her colleagues to learn more about how we can live a healthier life and give back to our own communities at the same time.

This week, Ruthie gives an overview of Outdoor Chattanooga and we discuss the benefits of bicycling over driving.

We know her, we love her, we hope she loves us. One of our favorite regular guests, the Bargain Babe, called us today from Breckenridge, CO where  she’s rubbing shoulders with some of the nation’s top bloggers.

They call him the Headlight Renew Doctor because he helps turn those clouded up, some would say “funky” headlights into the crystal clear, light-providing devices they were when they were new. Who wouldn’t want clear headlights?  Chris Watts,  the doctor himself,  stopped by the David Magee show on Wednesday to discuss his product (available here) and his path to owning and operating a small-business. He’s up against some major corporations (3M) but he stands behind his product. His story is one to watch. We’ll do just that with updates.

If you are a man and you shave with a razor that has more than 1-blade Listen Up! YOU ARE DOING IT ALL WRONG.

There is a bit of an underground movement of individuals who have reverted back to classic shaving, otherwise known as the way your grandfather shaved every day. A man’s shaving kit includes, at the very basic level, a shaving brush, a shaving cream/soap, and a razor with disposable blades. From there the sky is the limit.

Here’s what we’ve noticed as of Sunday (6/27) from Gulf Shores, AL:

Found this foam football on the beach in front of the hotel just moments ago. I’m serious:

The oil is washing ashore. A LOT of oil is washing ashore.  And it’s not liquid. Thick mounds of black, muddy tar are covering the shoreline. The density of the tar is amazing. It’s actually heavy. I understand now why it’s nearly impossible to clean birds after they’ve come in contact with the stuff.

The amount of apparent damage to the Gulf Shores beaches has increased in just the past few hours. Morning Low tide will give a better indicator as to how bad it actually is, but I can tell you firsthand the beaches are black.

At least 30 boats (Vessels of Opportunity, we’re told) have begun forming circles out in the water, just about a mile or so out. One can only imagine the crews are trying to prevent even more damage to the coastline. The problem isn’t on the surface, however. Much of these “tar balls” are mixing on the seabed and never even reach the surface. Supposedly, officials are “cleaning up”as much as the can, but I haven’t a clue as to how.

This is, quite honestly, the most depressing event I’ve ever witnessed. I mean, what can you do? There’s literally nothing we can do but watch it unfold. A walk on the beach has turned into a health risk. We’re on the 9th floor of a beach-side condominium complex and the odor in the air is nauseating. The situation is dire.

Value, Value, Value…our favorite three words here at the David Magee Show. We spend hundreds of dollars every year on detergent alone and, if you’re like me, we haven’t a clue as to what we’re spending money on. It’s time to remedy that. Too many words are tossed about when it comes to detergent: Hypoallergenic, Concentrated Cold Wash, Ultra Mountain, Fresh Green Envy ,Water-resistant, After Wash Sea-Smell Breeze Powder….HELP!

Thankfully we do have help. The great folks at Consumer Reports have released a new study of 57 of the most popular detergents and published the results. They’ve found the best of the best and which ones (Martha *cough* Stewart *cough*) are no better than water. Literally NO BETTER THAN WATER.
